A total of 17 athletes brought home 24 of the top 10 placements in the USTA Nationals in Madison, Wisconsin, June 20-24.

Sophia Murphy, of Washington, won a total of three trophies as part of Ide Gymnastics based in Fairfield.

She took fifth place in Power Tumbling in the Novice level, seventh in Double Mini Trampoline in the Intermediate level and eighth in trampoline in the Sub-Advanced level, all in the 15-and-over age group.

Ide Gymnastics took 27 athletes to the competition where athletes are divided into age groups and skill levels, and the competitors are then placed into “flights” of no more than 10 each.

The scores are compiled and posted according to their placement against all other competitors in the same age and skill level, and some of these levels total 70 or more girls or boys.

The overall, top 10 scoring performers receive a trophy.

Coaches Jeff and Jeanne Ide were very happy with the team’s results.

Jeff said, “These kids competed against 2,500 other trampolinists, many of whom have been practicing their skills and going to nationals for a number of years.

“The fact that 23 out of 27 from Ide Gymnastics team members were national Top 15 and 17 of our team members made it into the top 10 national finishers is something for the team to feel very proud of, especially since a number of them have only been taking lessons for a few months.

“We are going to move forward with both the gymnastics and the trampoline teams this coming year.

“I don’t doubt that we’ll bring home more trophies next year, these kids are ready to do what it takes to succeed.”
