Keith and Sara Murphy of Washington have been selected to be the 2017 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame recipients of Washington County, the Washington County 4-H Extension Office reported.

The Murphys will be honored at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Lions Club Stage during the Washington County Fair and will later be honored during the Iowa State Fair.

According to the extension office, the couple has been married 57 years and it all started while dating in the Washington County 4-H program. Since then, they have raised six children through the 4-H program, where the family is most recognized in the cattle barns. In one year the family showed 18 calves.

Sara Murphy was the Headliner 4-H Club leader for 23 years, Keith Murphy has led the Washington County Fair livestock auction for 61 years.

“Keith and Sara have touched many lives — generations even — as volunteers for Washington County 4-H,” Amy Green, Washington County 4-H Youth Coordinator, said. “We invite the community to show their appreciation and invite those who had learned, worked, and played with the Murphys through 4-H to honor them at this Hall of Fame presentation.”
