A house fire was reported on 401 South Ninth in Washington Tuesday evening. Washington Fire Chief Tom Wide said there was significant damage to the kitchen and some damage to the attic area of the house.

Officials responded to the scene of a house fire at 401 South Ninth Avenue Tuesday evening.

According to the Washington County Communications call log, the first call came in at 8:38 p.m.

The caller reported the fire was in the kitchen and everyone was out. The Washington Fire Department, Washington Police Department and Washington County Ambulance responded to the scene.

Washington Fire Chief Tom Wide said there was significant damage to the kitchen and some damage to the attic area of the house.

“What happened was there was a cooking fire on the stove and it traveled up through the hood vent, caught the hood vent on fire and then spread to the attic,” Wide said.

The attic was full of blown-in insulation.

“Blown insulation is made out of ground-out papers and is treated with a fire retardant, but still catches fire quickly,” Wide said.

Fire crews were on scene for a while last night putting out hot spots but had to return to the scene at 5:25 a.m. Wednesday morning, a neighbor reported smoke coming from the roof, the call log said.

“There was an area that was smoldering,” Wide said.

He doesn’t think they’ll have to return again, he added.

Cooking fires are usually caused by people leaving things unattended on the stove but Wide doesn’t believe this was the case for this situation.

“They did right thing,” he said. “They got everybody out and called it in.”

Wide said there are some things homeowners can do.

“Have a fire extinguisher readily available and then call the fire department to have them check things out,” he said.
