Trial information against Clarence Dean Pedersen, 64, of Washington, is expected to be filed later this morning according to Washington County Attorney John Gish which will make a preliminary hearing scheduled for today unnecessary.

“The trial information is an indictment,” Gish said. “It is an allegation of charges against the defendant.”

Gish said at a later date a judge will schedule an arraignment for Pedersen, where Pedersen will have the opportunity to plead guilty or not guilty. He said Pedersen has been appointed counsel from the Iowa State Public Defender’s office.

Pedersen remains in the Washington County Jail under $1 million bond after being charged with first-degree murder in the death of Ed Jones, 70, after investigating officers found several pieces of evidence linking him to the killing, including a handwritten note saying, “Kill Ed.”

Pedersen was taken into custody around 10 p.m., Wednesday, July 11, after Washington Police were dispatched to an apartment complex at 601 W. Adams St., earlier that day. Jones’ body was discovered by a caretaker working for Optimae Life Services who was called after Jones had not arrived at his place of employment for his scheduled shift.
