Philip Eugene Leyden, 83, of Washington, Iowa, died Saturday, August 5, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City following a short illness.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 10, at St. James Catholic Church with Fr. Bernie Weir and Fr. Dennis Martin officiating. Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Prayer services will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will be held at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Memorials have been established for Hospice Compassus or the Palliative Care Team at the University of Iowa. Leyden was born April 17, 1934, in Birmingham, Iowa, the son of Earnest Jacob and Olive Helen (Kimmel) Leyden. He attended school in Washington, Iowa, graduating from Washington High School in 1952. Phil served honorably in the United States Army for two years. He was united in marriage to Sally C. Bruty on May 18, 1957, in Washington, Iowa.

Phil was a lifelong resident of Washington, Iowa, where he was employed as a Collating and Bindery Supervisor at McCleery Cumming Calendar Factory for 34 years. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church. Family was a focal point of Phil's life and he cherished the time he spent with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid golfer, and Iowa Hawkeye fan and was known as a fine craftsman, refinishing furniture and doing woodworking. He enjoyed music and dancing.

Phil is survived by his wife, Sally Leyden of Washington, Iowa; son, Tony Leyden of Omaha, Neb.; daughter, Beth (Tim) Fuller of Ringgold, Ga.; son, Matt (Gena) Leyden of Columbus Junction, Iowa; daughter, Jolynn Leyden of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Theresa (Jerry) Webster of Springfield, Neb.; twelve grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.

He is also survived by sister, Jean (John) Sliekers of Waterloo, Iowa; sister, Treva Kilgore of Washington, Iowa; sister, Ina Rae Gappa of Wilton, Iowa; brother, Kim (Joan) Leyden of Washington, Iowa; brother, Roger (Linda) Leyden of Washington, Iowa; sister, Kathy (Keith) Sulzner of Iowa City, Iowa; brother, Eric (Sherry) Leyden of Ottumwa, Iowa; sister-in-law, Donna Leyden of Riverside, Iowa; sister-in-law, Jane Leyden of Washington, Iowa; brother-in-law, George Davison of Washington, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mary Ann Davison and Cherie Sapp; brothers, Jim Leyden and Mike Leyden; and brother-in-law, Ed Gappa.
