Play Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt

May 31, 2013
To remind us of the role Washington played on the Underground Railroad, we have included the marker for John Williams, a former slave. Walk due east of the center circle until you find his large, impressive marker which faces west. We don’t know how Williams actually came here, but we are mightily impressed that local citizens put up such a wonderful grave marker. Standing in front of this monument to freedom we never fail to feel a chill or wonder at the courage it took to arrive here. What year did Williams arrive in Washington?

Welcome to the 2013 Historical Preservation Scavenger Hunt. The City of Washington’s Historic Preservation Commission hopes you will help the commissioners celebrate for the next four weeks. All of the answers to the clues can be found in the two local cemeteries. Please take care as you wander in search of markers and mausoleums.

More detailed guidelines and an entry blank may be found in the Tuesday, May 28, Journal. Photos and clues are published Monday through Thursday for four weeks. Answers will be published the following week.
