Arrests

Michael Patrick Wilt, 52, of Ottumwa, was arrested Friday afternoon in the 300 block of North Benton Street in Brighton on a charge of driving under suspension, 23rd offense.

Samantha Nicole Wheeler, 29, of Washington, was arrested Friday afternoon in the 2100 block of Lexington Boulevard in Washington on two Jefferson County warrants, one for possession of a controlled substance second offense, and one for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jessica Jean Morales, 31, of Kalona, was arrested Friday night in the 500 block of 11th Street in Kalona on a charge of first-degree harassment. Her children were put in protective custody.

Shaun Michael Farrington, 36, of Cedar Rapids, was arrested Saturday night in the 500 block of First Street S.W. in Cedar Rapids on a Washington County warrant for failure to appear for revocation hearing for violation of probation on an original charge of domestic abuse assault, third or subsequent offense.

 

Traffic accident

A caller Friday morning in the 600 block of South Fourth Avenue in Washington reported that a vehicle hit her vehicle in front of the school. There were no injuries, and the roadway was not blocked. The vehicles involved were a black Chevrolet Malibu and a charcoal minivan. An officer responded. Damage was under $1,500. Information was exchanged. Photos were taken. No citations were issued.

A caller Friday morning at the Highway 218 ramp and Highway 92 in Ainsworth reported a vehicle accident on the southbound off-ramp to Highway 92. All vehicles were off onto the shoulder. Vehicles were a maroon van, a dark-colored SUV, and a truck. An officer responded. One vehicle had gone into the ditch. Other vehicle operators were helping the driver. There were no injuries and no damage.

A caller Friday morning at South Wiley Boulevard and Highway 92 in Washington reported she was hit by another vehicle that slid around the corner. There was damage to her driver side but no injuries. The roadway was partially blocked. An officer responded. Damage was over $1,500, and a state accident report will be filed. A citation was issued to Susan Alvarez, of Washington, for failure to maintain control.

A caller Friday morning in the 3200 block of Highway 218 in Crawfordsville reported a goldish-brown colored Chevrolet Silverado truck in the ditch, northbound south of Mile Marker 60, with a female driver. Iowa State Patrol officers responded and were unable to locate the truck. They located tracks near Mile Marker 60 that were in and out of the ditch.

An officer reported being out with a car in the ditch, Saturday morning at Spruce Avenue and Highway 92 in Washington. The officer gave the subjects a ride to a residence in Ainsworth. The vehicle was added to the system.

A caller Saturday morning in the 1100 block of Enterprise Road in Riverside reported that someone struck his vehicle while he was pulling into a convenience store off Highway 22. He gave them his insurance information but then left. An officer responded. The accident occurred on private property, and insurance information was exchanged. Documentation only was made.

A caller Saturday afternoon in the 2400 block of Highway 92 in Washington reported that she slid into another vehicle in the parking lot. There were no injuries. An officer responded. The vehicle was a parked Toyota Camry rental car. The accident occurred on private property, and information was exchanged.

A caller Sunday morning at Highway 218 and 282nd Street in Crawfordsville reported a dark-colored Ford F-150 in the southbound ditch with headlights on. An officer responded. The driver had a tow truck en route. The officer was unable to read the license plate because it was under the snow. A tow truck arrived while the deputy was on the scene.

A caller Sunday morning at Highway 218 and the Highway 22 ramp in Riverside reported a car in the ditch about half a mile from Riverside. The subject inside was not responsive and appeared to be sleeping. Riverside QRS and Fire, an ambulance and an officer responded. The ambulance was disregarded. The subject was fine and was waiting for the tow company.

A caller Sunday afternoon in the 600 block of Fourth Street in Kalona reported that someone hit his daughter’s white Ford Escape that was parked on the street. An officer responded. It appeared it had possibly been a snowplow, and he would make contact with the city about it.

 

Traffic other

A caller Friday morning in the 200 block of East Seventh Street in Washington reported a vehicle had been parked for two days and evenings without being moved. The vehicle was tagged with a 24-hour tow tag.

An officer advised being out with a vehicle along the roadway, Friday morning in the 2800 block of 220th Street in Ainsworth. The subject was a realtor just out taking pictures of a residence.

A caller Friday morning in the 2800 block of Highway 1 in Washington reported a vehicle had gone into the ditch. The vehicle was a gold van. An officer responded. The subject was fine, and a tow truck was on the way to assist.

A caller Friday afternoon in the 300 block of North Marion Avenue in Washington reported that a vehicle had been running inside the bay for almost two hours. Dispatch made a phone call to the registered owner and left a message. Officers responded to the car wash. The vehicle was locked, and the owner was arriving at the location. Someone was coming to unlock the vehicle.

A caller early Saturday morning at Highway 218 and 130th Street in Riverside reported that a green car went into the ditch. The caller believed the subject was intoxicated. Officers responded. The subject was not intoxicated. A family member went to the site and picked him up. The vehicle was going to stay on the shoulder in the ditch overnight until it could be towed in the morning.

A caller Saturday morning in the 500 block of West Fountain Street in Brighton reported four snowmobiles had been traveling on the city roads and through the caller’s yard. An officer responded to the area but was unable to locate any snowmobiles. The tracks appeared as if they drove through town and went east toward Highway 78.

An officer received a report regarding vehicles on the square that had not been moved, Saturday noon in the 200 block of South Iowa Avenue in Washington. The officer responded and issued five citations.

An officer reported being in reference to a report of a white ‘90s LeBaron pulling two youngsters on an inner tube, Sunday afternoon at East Second Street and North Ninth Avenue in Washington. The officer advised that the vehicle was parked when he arrived. The operator was advised that it was illegal, and he advised they would not do it again.

A caller Sunday night at Kiwi Avenue and 50th Street in Washington reported a vehicle in the ditch. The vehicle was unoccupied and was added to the system.

 

Disabled vehicles

An officer reported being out checking on a vehicle that DOT requested be towed, Friday morning at 140th Street and Highway 218 in Riverside. The vehicle was well off the roadway and had been added to the system. Dispatch had phoned the registered owner regarding the need to move the vehicle. The officer advised that a tow truck was at the site getting the vehicle towed away.

A deputy reported being out with a disabled vehicle, Friday afternoon at Vine Avenue and 175th Street in Riverside. The officer added the vehicle to the system.

A deputy reported being out with a disabled vehicle, Saturday night at 545th Street S.E. and Highway 218. The officer added the vehicle to the system.

A vehicle was reported in the ditch, Saturday night in the 3000 block of Highway 1 in Washington. It was tagged and added to the system. The operators did leave a note that they got a flat tire and would return. On Sunday morning State Roads called and advised that that vehicle would need to be towed because it was in the way of the plows. An officer advised that it was close to the fog line. The vehicle was towed and was entered as towed.

A disabled vehicle was reported, Saturday night in the 3100 block of Highway 1 in Brighton. The operator could not get the vehicle up the driveway. The owners will clean out the driveway and try to get the vehicle moved.

An officer reported being out with a disabled vehicle with flashers on, Sunday morning at Highway 218 and 150th Street in Riverside. The officer added it to the system. The vehicle was unoccupied.

An officer reported being out with an unoccupied vehicle, Sunday morning at Parkside Estates and West Madison Street in Washington. The officer added the vehicle to the system.

 

Fire calls

A caller Friday afternoon in the 600 block of East Washington Street in Washington reported that the upper level of her home was filling up with smoke. Washington Fire Department, an ambulance, and officers all responded. Alliant Energy was also contacted to respond.

A caller Sunday night in the 2700 block of 285th Street in Washington reported a fire in the basement. Before the units arrived, the caller called back and advised that they extinguished the fire. Officers and Washington Fire Department responded. A juvenile daughter started the fire in the basement and will be charged with first-degree arson. A Juvenile Probation officer responded and took over custody of the juvenile.

A caller Sunday night in the 800 block of South Avenue B in Washington reported no smoke or flames but that it smelled as if something were hot. Washington Fire Department responded.

 

Animal complaint

A caller Friday afternoon at Vine Avenue and East View Circle Drive in Riverside reported an injured deer in the west ditch. An officer responded and assisted.

A caller Saturday morning in the 500 block of West Washington Street in Washington reported a dog barking -- possibly in distress -- for the past hour in the neighborhood. An officer checked the area and was unable to locate the dog.

 

Burglary

A caller Saturday morning in the 500 block of C Avenue in Kalona reported a burglary. An officer responded. An incident report will be filed.

A caller Saturday night in the 1100 block of East Washington Street in Washington reported the theft of items. He planned to meet with an officer at the Safety Center. An officer was advised. The caller did not show up to the Safety Center to speak to the officer. Documentation was made.

 

Family offense nonviolent

A caller Friday night in the 2100 block of Lexington Boulevard in Washington reported a child in an apartment without supervision, and requested that an officer check on her. An officer spoke with the mother, who arrived at the time the officer did. The daughter was fine. There had been miscommunication between parents.

A caller Sunday morning in the 700 block of Sixth Street in Kalona reported that his wife was throwing his clothes outside. An officer responded. The parties were separated.

A caller Sunday night in the 500 block of 11th Street in Kalona reported a violation of a no-contact order on Feb. 9. Charges will be filed on an Iowa City resident for violation of a no-contact order.

 

Hang-up 911 calls

Dispatch reported a 911 hang-up from a landline, Sunday morning in the 2300 block of Palm Avenue. Upon callback, the line was static. An officer responded and was unable to get anyone to come to the door.  A subject called Dispatch back and advised that no one was actually home, so he was not sure why the landline would make a 911 call.

Dispatch reported that a phone call came in on 911 and hung up, Sunday afternoon in the 100 block of West 13th Street in Washington. Dispatch called back. Someone hung up. An officer responded to the residence and spoke with an adult, who advised that two young children were there, possibly playing with the phone.

 

Suspicious activity

A caller Friday night in the 100 block of D Avenue in Kalona reported footprints in the snow around his residence. An officer responded and extra patrol was given. This appeared to be tracks from the meter reader.

A caller Friday night in the 100 block of B Avenue in Kalona reported receiving a suspicious letter in the mail. An officer responded. Documentation was made.

A caller Saturday morning in the 2600 block of 220th Street in Washington reported that it appeared someone attempted to break into the home and had gone through the residence. An officer responded. A report will be filed.

A caller Saturday afternoon in the 2700 block of Airport Road in Washington reported that his ex-girlfriend sent him inappropriate photos. An officer advised the ex-girlfriend to have no further contact with the male party.

 

Tobacco violations

An officer reported a tobacco violation at a business, Saturday evening in the 200 block of East First Street in Riverside. A citation was issued to Jason Frederick Ree, 19, of Keota, for supplying tobacco to a minor.

 

Welfare check

A caller Saturday morning in the 200 block of South Iowa Avenue in Washington requested a welfare check. An officer responded and assisted.
