Police seek suspect in domestic call

By David Hotle | Aug 30, 2017

What started as a simple domestic call for the Washington Police Department Tuesday afternoon led to a high-speed chase into rural Ainsworth and a search through a cornfield for a suspect.

Washington Police Lt. Lyle Hansen said while the suspect still is at large, he does not believe there is a threat to the community.

He said the police department also has to consider whether he is a threat to himself. The name of the suspect has not been released at this time.

The Washington County Communications Center received a domestic call at about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday.

On arrival officers were able to establish there was a long gun involved.

The male subject had fled the scene before officers’ arrival. A description of the vehicle he was driving was broadcast and a patrol unit located the vehicle. Hansen said there was both a slow-speed and high-speed pursuit, with the suspect vehicle ending up driving through a fence and crashing into a cornfield at 230th Street and Spruce Avenue in rural Ainsworth.

Hansen said a drone was used to approach the truck to see if anyone was inside.

He said the suspect reportedly had a gun and the drone was used to approach the truck rather than risk officers’ safety. It was later used to help search for the suspect. Hansen said the MRAP was also brought to the scene.

“It was a handful just getting ahold of all the people in the area and telling them to either shelter in place or leave the area,” Hansen said. “A lot of people left the area voluntarily.”

Officers searched the cornfield until about 5 p.m. for the suspect. In addition to the Washington Police Department, the Iowa State Patrol, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Department of Natural Resources, and the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s office. Hansen was unsure how many officers were involved in the search, but said there were several.

Hansen said no warrant has been filed on the suspect, but charges are pending if he is found.

Charges including domestic abuse with a firearm and eluding.
