Questers visit Shellsburg

Jul 09, 2018

Ten members of Martha Washington Questers 1032 went on an outing on June 22. They traveled to Shellsburg to visit and have lunch with Inga Schminke, who is Austrian and has stories to tell about life there during World War II. Their village suffered under Hitler and then was occupied by the Russians. Her family finally immigrated to Canada when she was 15 years old. In Canada she met a young fisherman and farmer from Shellsburg, Iowa, and that soon led to marriage and a new life as wife of an Iowa farmer. She adapted slowly and was married almost 54 years to her husband, Oliver. Her family all live nearby, but she always remembers her life in Austria. She has led 99 tours back to Austria and has opened her home to those who would like to hear her story and enjoy a wonderful German lunch. Martha Washington Questers 1032 members who visited Shellsburg are: Front row, left to right, Virginia Reighard, Janet Peterson, Jane  Fehr, Marilyn Whitenack, Maurine Roberts; back row, L to R, Connie Pence, Marge Lasek, Jan Stiles, Sally Beezley, Linda Newlon.
