Remembering the dream

To the Editor:
The 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech reminds me of a time four years earlier in November of 1959 when I was a senior at Iowa State Teacher’s College, now UNI, in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Martin Luther King was the speaker at a special program in the old auditorium on that day. He told us about Montgomery, Ala. The auditorium was so crowded, I had to sit on the steps in the aisle in the balcony.
I would like to say I remember everything he said, but I don’t. I do recall I felt I was witnessing a person of exceptional commitment to a cause. His delivery was very impressive. I feel it is incumbent on all of us to understand the struggle for human rights for many people continues and we have to do whatever we can, wherever we are to help the “Dream” come true.
