Second-graders learn how to fight germs

Oct 25, 2017

After an attack of Glo-Germs, the second-graders at Mid Prairie East Elementary reviewed and practiced good hand-washing techniques through the Pick a Better Snack program on Oct.17.

Amy Green, Washington County Extension/4-H & Youth Coordinator, demonstrated with glo-germ powder on a baseball how quickly germs spread while tracking everything they touched with a black light. Students took signs home to remind their families the importance of proper han-washing.

Students from Kerri Bell’s classroom enjoyed the glow-in-the-dark lesson. Greyson Ghumm, son of Nicole and Ken Vrchoticky, was surprised to see glow in the dark germs on his hands after the review game. His classmates Travis Ray and McKenzie Dinnel also showed evidence of germs. Students also enjoyed broccoli as the healthy snack for the day.

The Mid-Prairie Pick a Better Snack program is supported by Mid Prairie Boosters, Washington County Riverboat Foundation and Washington County Extension. If you have any questions about the Pick a Better Snack program or would like to volunteer or sponsor, please call the Washington County Extension Office at 319-653-4811.
