Sheep and goat weigh-in dates set

Apr 16, 2018

4-H/FFA sheep and goat exhibitors need to mark these dates for the official weigh-in and start dates to their projects. Goat weigh-in is May 3, from 5:30 – 7 p.m. at the goat barn. Lambs will weigh in on May 5, from 8:30 – 10:30 a.m., at the sheep barn.

All market lambs, feeder lambs, meat goats and dairy wethers must be weighed and tagged, and all commercial ewe lambs and meat goat does must be tagged to be eligible to be shown at the Washington County Fair.

There is a charge per animal for ear tags, paid the day of weigh-in.

State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben requirements for sheep are: members need to determine by weigh-in those animals they intend to take to the State Fair and/or Ak-Sar-Ben. There is a fee for each animal at each the State Fair; any lamb (market, purebred, yearling) going to the State Fair must attend weigh-in for retinal scanning; and retinal scanning will be completed for State Fair-nominated animals, and a DNA sample will be taken on Ak-Sar-Ben nominated animals only.

State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben requirements for market goats are: members may nominate market goat wethers for State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben. Goats nominated for State Fair will be tagged, weighed, and retinal scanned on weigh-in day. For Ak-Sar-Ben a DNA sample will be taken. There is a fee for each animal at each the State Fair; and any goat (market or breeding does) going to the State Fair must attend weigh-in for retinal scanning.

Ak-Sar-Ben is a 4-H livestock show held in Nebraska the end of September. This exhibition is open to 4-H’ers and their livestock projects.

Please contact the Washington County Extension Office at 319-653-4811, with any questions about the spring weigh-ins or how to get involved as a volunteer or sponsor for 4-Hers and their livestock projects.
