The Washington Demons softball team took to the field at Kalona, Wednesday, June 21, winning their game 7-2 over the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks.

Jessie Buchholz started off the game’s scoring by getting a run in the first inning.

Haylee Wilson scored in the second inning, putting the score at 2-0.

Mid-Prairie put up their first run in the game in the third inning, to shorten Washington’s lead 2-1, but Washington would answer back when Hannah Anderson, pinch running for Brooke Stout, scored a run in the fifth inning, extending Washington’s lead to 3-1.

Megan Mitchell crossed the plate in the sixth, to put the score at 4-1.

In the seventh, Mitchell scored another run, followed by Morgan Brinning scoring a run and Sydney Clark crossing the plate for pitcher Molly Sparks.

Mid-Prairie tried to come back in the seventh, but would end up short after only scoring one run, giving Washington the win.

“Overall, it was a really good night for us,” said coach Ben Obermann.

“At times, it was a little frustrating offensively, as we got so many runners on base, but couldn't get them in.

“However, we stuck with it and were able to break through in the seventh inning.

“I thought our approaches at the plate were really good, which was a result of the high traffic on the bases for us.

"Defensively, we played one of our best games of the year. For having some girls playing at different positions, I was really impressed.

“Jessie [Buchholz] got some great reads in center field to save some hits, and our left side of the infield, Morgan [Brinning] and Kaitlyn [Mitchell] did an excellent job.

“Molly [Sparks] was great again in the circle and gave us a chance to win once again. It was a nice bounce back win for us.”

The girls’ record is now 15-13. Their next game is at Muscatine Friday, June 23, starting at 10 a.m.
