Southeast Iowa Case Management to close

Dec 06, 2017

By Xiomara Levsen, The JOURNAL

The county received a letter Tuesday morning letting them know a case management group is shutting down.

Southeast Iowa Case Management has notified all of the counties they serve, including Washington County, that they will be shutting down effective Dec. 31, because of the Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) involved in the health care system in Iowa, supervisor chairman Richard Young said.

“So just have people aware of that,” he added.

Mental Health and Disability Coordinator Bobbie Wulf said this decision was primarily due to AmeriHealth no longer being available in Iowa. AmeriHealth was the last health care company that contracted with Southeast Iowa to provide case management services to those who are physically disabled from things such as head injuries and illnesses.

“The remaining two MCOs do their case management internally,” she said, “so therefore their (Southeast Iowa Case Management) services were no longer needed.”

They tried to work very hard to get a contract with the two MCOs to continue working with the clients and provide them care, but those contracts were denied, Wulf added.

“And therefore they had to make their decision to close their doors,” she said. “The remaining clients that they have will be served internally with case management through the Managed Care Organizations that they’re assigned to.”

The board of directors of Southeast Iowa Case Management will meet at 1 p.m., in Ottumwa, Friday, supervisor Jack Seward Jr. said. He will be at that meeting representing the county.

Young said he brought this up because he wanted people aware of what was happening.

“It’s just another thing that the MCOs have affected,” Young added. “Hopefully the state legislators will look at that this year. Well, we can hope.”
