Spanish workshop on college entry offered

Jan 11, 2018

Latinos for Washington Inc., in conjunction with the University of Iowa, is hosting an instructional workshop directed to showing Latino students how to apply and be accepted for college.

Group member Jackie Amigon said a similar program was held in October at the University of Iowa. She said the event was a success and the three presenters have been giving the presentation at area high schools.

The workshop is a presentation on how to become a college student and gives general information to parents on how to help students transition from high school to college. The speakers also provide information on key dates of such things as financial aid and ACT testing.

“Many high schools already do something like this as part of the curriculum, but it is done in English,” Amigon said. “This is done in Spanish. They also encorporated their own experiences. The presenters are staff members of the University, but they are bilingual.”

The meeting is at 6 p.m. in the Washington High School choir room.

Amigon said parents would receive useful tips on colleges and universities.

She said it was a lot of general information on how to use resources universities have. She said the emphasis would not be on the University of Iowa, but is designed to show parents how to help their students go to any college.

People unable to attend the event can contact Latinos for Washington Inc. for more assistance. Amigon said the group would have the resources and literature that will be gone over during the workshop, as well as video of the presentations.

“Hopefully we can kind of guide them and help pinpoint where to go if they have any more questions,” Amigon said.

Latinos for Washington and Kirkwood Community College are also partnering to offer free U.S. citizenship classes from Jan. 22 to Feb. 28 in the Washington Public Library.

Classes will meet twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
