Special prom scheduled in local church

By David Hotle | Jun 23, 2017

In what promises to be a magical night for special-needs clients, a special prom will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. June 30 in the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

Organizer Genie Davis said it has been five years since the last such prom was held. During the last prom, which was held at the Washington Community Y, close to 100 people attended. Davis said that one day it had occurred to her that it was time for the special-needs clients to have a prom. After talking to area volunteers, all of whom felt it was a great idea, the event began moving ahead.

“They can come, enjoy the fun, enjoy other peers,” she said. “It starts at 6 p.m. There is a grand march at 6:15 p.m. The public is welcome to come and watch the grand march. I have volunteers serving the meal, so it is a sit-down thing. I have volunteers clearing the tables. We have Pastor Jason from the Crawfordsville and Ainsworth area to be the DJ. There will be dancing.”

The theme of the prom is “A Magical Night.”

Davis prefers people pay for participation at the event when they arrive, with checks made out to the United Methodist Church. She said there would be a table set up to collect money. Money for pictures needs to be kept separate, she said, because Tori Sueppel will do the pictures and she will use the money for printing.

Last Wednesday, a group went to Wayland to attend the youth center to pick out prom dresses, shoes and jewelry, Davis said. She said it was amazing because it was free. She also credits help from WCDC in keeping the project on track.

“We can expect to see a lot of happy faces,” Davis said.

She said anyone in the community is welcome. The cost of attending is $6 per person and a meal will be served. Pictures can also be purchased. To RSVP for the event, call 319-653-7568.
