On four days during the 175th celebration, which begins Sunday morning, parking around the square will be limited to provide room for displays and events that will center on the Washington square.
Washington Chamber of Commerce assistant director Dani Kane said that on Sunday, no parking will be allowed in the interior parking spaces of the square closest to Central Park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. She said that this is to provide room for the Corn Country Cruisers to display vintage cars during the scheduled car show.
On Wednesday, parking will also be restricted in the interior lanes of the square from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and no parking will be allowed adjacent to the Perdock lot. Kane explained Wednesday is Arts and Crafts Day. Washington Street will be used for a sidewalk chalk competition. A variety of games for all ages with be held in the other areas.
Thursday is Ag Day, Kane said, and there will be no parking on interior spaces of Washington Stree from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and there will be no parking all the other interior spaces from 3 to 9 p.m. The event will include a tractor parade that will end on the Square as well as a display of modern agricultural equipment.
On Saturday, June 7, the Square will be entirely a pedestrian zone, Kane said. She said free shuttles will go around town picking up people at nine locations, including retirement homes and apartment complexes. She said a map will be distributed and also available on the Chamber of Commerce Web site. She also said there are five lots within walking distances of the downtown area, including the city lot, the UP Church lot, the Goodwill lot, Perdock lot and Marion Avenue lot will be open. North Iowa Avenue will be reserved for handicapped parking. There will be signs directing motorists to the lots.
Kane said Ridiculous Day will go rain or shine. In the event of rain on Saturday night during the bands, the event will be held in a hangar at the Washington Municipal Airport. She said Airport personnel would direct parking.
She also said the Chamber and the 175th still need about 100 volunteers for information booths and for the June 7th evening events. For more information, contact the chamber at 653-3272.
