STEM Club registrations open

Sep 14, 2017

The 4-H After School STEM Club is now taking registrations for the March and April sessions. This science club is open to all students in third to fifth-grade. Washington County Extension and 4-H and Lincoln Elementary are partnering together with a sponsorship from Bazooka Farmstar and Premier 1 to offer additional and fun ways for Washington youth to interact with science more in a hands-on setting while making new friends and connecting with caring adults in the community. This camp is open to any third to fifth-grade student who wants to experiment more with science, technology, engineering, and math. Each session will use an Engineering is Elementary and State 4-H curriculum..

The October session is scheduled for Oct. 3, 10, 17 and titled “A Long Way Down” taught by Liz Goodwin and Amy Green. Students will become aerospace engineers and use space technologies to design a parachute to be the quickest, carry the most, land the safest, or all three. Practice launches and experiments will teach about drag, atmosphere, and engineering variables.

The November session will run Nov. 7, 14, 21. It is called “Taking the Plunge” and will be taught by Janet Conrad and Amy Green. Students will get to experience some ocean engineering in Iowa when learning about sounding poles and sonar maps. They will build submersibles to retrieve valuable packages off the ocean floor.

Registrations accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis until Sept. 26 at the Lincoln Elementary Office or the Washington County Extension Office. There is a fee due with the registration form for each session or for current 4-H members. Students may register for one or both STEM Club sessions.

Teaching assistants are being hired. Contact the Washington County Extension Office if interested in this position. Parent volunteers are also welcome.

Forms are also available on the Extension website at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/washington/

Please contact the Washington County Extension Office, 319-653-4811 or amygreen@iastate.edu, with any questions about this STEM Club or how to get involved with other youth science activities.
