The City of Washington received the 2012 Tree City USA Growth Award at the 23rd annual Community Forestry Awards Luncheon on April 2. The city has been a Tree City USA for 23 years and the growth award means the city has gone above and beyond the Tree City requirements.

Washington was one of 24 Iowa communities to qualify for Tree City USA Growth status. To receive the award, the city must meet four minimum requirements in the following categories: education and public relations, partnerships, planning and management and tree planting and maintenance.

The Tree Giveaway will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 20, in downtown Washington. At 9 a.m., this spring's big project of 60 trees at the new wastewater treatment center will be done with Boy Scouts and other volunteers.
