Getting recognized for good grades in school is a common occurrence.

Having a sports team recognized for those good grades doesn’t happen as much, especially two teams.

That’s what happened recently for both the Washington boys golf and boys soccer teams.

The two get were the only ones in the Southeast Iowa Conference recognized for their hard work as the Iowa High School Athletic Association for being studious during their sports season this year.

The state recognizes those who have collectively excelled in the classroom.

There are two different awards given, the Excellence in Academic Achievement and the Distinguished in Academic Achievement.

The Excellence award is given to the team who achieve a combined grade-point average (GPA) between 3.00 and 3.24. The Distinguished award is given to teams who have a combined GPA between 3.25 and 4.00.

The boys golf team had an overall GPA of 3.54 for the spring 2017 season, giving them a Distinguished in Academic Achievement award from the state.

Coach Mark Berhow is pleased at the honor.

“This is a significant accomplishment as we strive to be successful in the classroom and on the course,” he says.

“Our players miss school time due to competition and staying caught up is important. I am proud of how our team has worked so hard on their academics while being student athletes.”

The boys soccer team had a 3.02 GPA for the spring 2017 season and coach Sally Hart is happy for the team.

“I was thrilled to learn of this academic accomplishment,” she says.

“As a head coach I’m working to help the team succeed, on and off the field, and academics always come first.

“I’m proud of my team for their hard work, and dedication to their studies and the team, and I am looking forward to next season.

“This is something Washington should take pride in across the board.”

Other area teams honored were the boys soccer team from IMS, as they had a 3.00 GPA to earn an Excellence in Academic Achievement honor.

The boys golf team from IMS had a 3.64 GPA this year to receive a Distinguished in Academic Achievement award from the state.
