Walter E. Gowan, age 85, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Thursday, December 28, 2017 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington.

 

Celebration of life services will be held at 1:30 pm Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at the McLaren Chapel at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines, Iowa. The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the McLaren Chapel on Wednesday. General calling hours will be held from noon until 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington. Interment with military honors will take place at Resthaven Cemetery. Memorials have been established for Hospice of Washington County or the United Presbyterian Home in Washington. Walter was born May 16, 1932 in Cleghorn, Iowa, the son of Elmer George and Lucile Octavia (Woodcock) Gowan. He graduated from Cleghorn High School. Walter was united in marriage to Lois Faye Hunsaker on May 28, 1955 in Mapleton, Iowa.

 

Walter served honorably in the United States Army from 1953 until 1954 in Korea. He worked for North Western Bell/U.S. West Communications for 30 years. Walter was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Washington and enjoyed visiting friends and relatives. He has lived in Washington, Iowa, for the past 23 years and resided in Urbandale, Iowa, for 23 years.

 

He is survived by daughter, Luann F. Olsen (Mathew) of Nevada, Iowa; son, Jack Gowan (Ruth) of Colona, Ill.; three grandchildren, Thomas E. Olsen (Kelsie), Peter E. Olsen, and Alen E. Gowan; two great-grandchildren, Eloise F. Olsen and Clyde E. Olsen; brother, Donald Gowan of Cranberry Township, Pa.; and brother, Richard Gowan of Cherokee, Iowa.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents in 1959; wife, Lois Gowan in 2000; son, Jeff R. Gowan in 2000; and his wife, Dorthea "Dee" Gowan in 1998
