Wapello defeats Columbus 38-0

Once again, the final score looks very lopsided in a game that saw the new makeup of the offensive line making progress. The team rushed for 150 yards with senior Nicolas Hernandez doing most of the damage with 84 yards on 16 carries. Senior Andrew King returned full time on offense and defense to give added push to the front line.

Mistakes continue to plague the Wildcats, as costly fumbles killed the momentum of several solid Columbus drives.

Defensively, the Wildcats were led by senior Nicolas Hernandez, who accounted for 13 solo tackles and 2 assists, including 3 solo tackles for loss.

Several major lapses on special teams proved to be backbreakers, starting with the opening kickoff that Wapello returned for a touchdown. Special teams will become a major point of emphasis this week, as we prepare for Sigourney-Keota.

Sigourney-Keota brings a potent ground attack that features a “spinner back” who receives the long snap from center and turns his back on the defense to conceal the ball before he hands it to the ball carrier. The key to their offense is deception and misdirection, and we will focus on reading our keys to locate the ball.
