Aug 28, 2017
Washington County 4-Hers who participated in the Iowa State Fair Awardrobe event included Baylee Stalder, daughter of Randy and Tanya Stalder, and Avery Blauvelt, daughter of Andy and Kim Blauvelt.

One hundred thirty Iowa youth from 68 counties participated in the 2017 Awardrobe Clothing Event Aug. 10 at the Youth Inn at the Iowa State Fair. Washington County 4-H’ers Baylee Stalder and Avery Blauvelt had advanced on to participate from the county fair contest.

The Awardrobe Clothing Event is an Iowa State Fair 4-H event that provides youth participants with opportunities to showcase their apparel design and production knowledge, as well as creativity skills. As a part of the showcasing experience, youth complete a comprehensive report and participate in conference judging. The event concludes with a runway show for all participants.

“4-H participants in the Awardrobe Clothing Event are evaluated on their oral and written communication skills, project goals, choice of clothing, knowledge of the garment as well as their poise and confidence displayed while modeling their outfits,” said Bonnie Dalager, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 4-H youth program specialist.

The youth participate in three categories: Clothing Selection — participants select or purchase an outfit for a specific occasion; Fashion Revue — garment is constructed, hand-knitted, machine-knitted or crocheted by a participant; and The $15 Challenge — 4-H’er purchases an outfit for $15 or less from garage sales, consignment shops or clothing resale stores.

Iowa State’s Department of Apparel, Events and Hospitality Management sponsors the On Trend Award for the projects that reflect current fashion trends. Washington County’s Baylee Stalder received this award.
