Washington places 2nd and 3rd in cross-country meet

Aug 30, 2017

The Washington Girls took second in team scores and the boys earned third at Iowa Mennonite School’s Early Bird cross country meet Tuesday on the school’s campus.

Three hundred sixty high school athletes representing fourteen schools competed in four separate races.

Washington Head Coach Stefanie Tschantz was pleased with the results.

“I was really impressed with how we ran last night. Most everyone ran a minute or more quicker this year than we did last year on the same course.

The girls finished 2nd and we had 3 girls earn medals (Brooke, Molly, Ashley). Boys ended up 3rd, also had 3 medalist (Brennan, Evan, Jacob). It was a tough field especially with Iowa City High and Cedar Rapids Jefferson, but I thought all of our kids really pushed themselves to do their best.

It was a great way to start the season. I am so proud of everyone, they all raced hard and left it all out there. It was a solid team effort tonight,” she said.

“Brennan, Evan and Jacob all had solid races on the boys side, they got out to a great start and were all sitting in the top 20 the whole race. They are use to running together in practice and pushing each other everyday, so they knew where they needed to be. Their confidence is much better this year and believing they should be up there with the leaders from the start. They all work so hard every day, its nice to see their hard work paying off. Matthew and Blake rounded out the top 5 on the boys side and both of them ran at least 3 minutes faster than last year, so they have both made huge strides,” Tschantz said.

“Brooke had an outstanding race, she got out to a great start and was sitting around 15th most of the race, Molly was right next to her that first 2 miles and I believe that helped push both of them. I think being a senior and realizing that it is the last time she will ever have to run each course is really starting to sink in. I’m excited to see what all she can accomplish this season. Ashley had her best cross country race by far, she was much more mentally focused this year, she had a goal in mind and was able to focus on it the whole meet. She will be another one to watch as the season goes along,” said Tschantz.

She said there is still work to be don.

We need to continue to build up our endurance, we looked exhausted with one mile to go, so we have some things to work on in practice to help us build that strength up.

Our next meet is tomorrow 8/31 at Ottumwa
