Washington softball team goes 1-of-2 in weekend tournament

The Washington softball team took part in tournament play Friday, June 23, in Muscatine, winning one of their two games played.

The first game resulted in a loss for the Demons as Muscatine scored three runs in the second inning to take the lead.

Washington answered back in the third by scoring four runs before Muscatine would tie the game at the bottom of the fourth.

No more runs would be allowed to score for Washington as Muscatine added another two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and the final three in the seventh to get the 4-10 win.

Haylee Wilson had a home run the game. Also scoring were Morgan Brinning, Sydney Clark and Hannah Anderson.

Alexa Mitchell took to the mound for Washington. She gave up the 10 runs on 11 hits while walking three.

In the second game of the day, Washington took an early 3-0 lead after the first inning while holding Wilton back to only one run in the second inning.

Wilton scored three runs in the third, to take a 4-3 lead before adding two more in the fifth, putting Washington behind at 6-3.

The Demons responded in the sixth inning as they closed the gap by scoring two runs and put up two more runs in the seventh. They held Wilton back in the bottom of the seventh to get the 7-6 win.

Brinning led the team in scoring with two runs. Jessie Buchholz, Kaitlyn Mitchell Alexa Mitchell, Molly Sparks and Anderson each had one run in the game  Sparks got the victory as pitcher allowing the six runs to score on eight hits while striking out two.

The girls have a 16-14 record and play in a conference doubleheader against Keokuk Monday, June 26, starting at 5:30 p.m.
