Washington to play Assumption

Oct 23, 2017

The high school football brackets are set and Washington has drawn a first-round match-up with the Davenport Assumption Knights.

“Obviously we are going to have a tough task going to Davenport Assumption on Friday, but this time of year they’re all tough match-ups,” said Demon Coach Garrison Carter.

Assumption (7-2) tied with West Delaware in Class 3A – District 4. West Delaware claimed the one seed in the district by virtue of a head-to-head victory over Assumption. Assumption’s only other loss came at the hands of Class 4A playoff contender Bettendorf.

Washington (8-1) will travel to Brady Street Stadium in Davenport on Friday, October 27. Game time is scheduled for 7 pm.

“We are going to have our hands full Friday, but I also believe we are playing as well as anyone in the state right now. If we continue to play the way we have been there aren’t a lot of teams that can beat us,” continued Carter.

The winner of the Washington - Assumption game will face the winner of Cedar Rapids Xavier (9-0) and Oskaloosa (6-3), who received a wild-card entry into the playoffs. The winner of that game would earn a trip to the UNI-Dome.

Davenport completed the regular season with 2,282 yards rushing and 1,186 yards passing. They averaged 6.9 yards per play. For comparison, Washington finished with 2,644 rush yards and 1,408 passing with an average of 9.0 yards per play.

“The main thing that stands out on film about this team is how similar they are to us. They are extremely aggressive defensively and will blitz almost every play,” said Carter. “Offensively they want to spread the defense out with a lot of different formations and then run the football. And their quarterback is an extremely talented player.”
