Washington's Green advances to the state quarterfinals

DES MOINES — Washington junior Fletcher Green moved one step closer to his goal of reaching the medal stand at the state wrestling tournament on Thursday evening.

Green, ranked fourth at 113 pounds, defeated Humboldt senior Kylie Zender 7-0 in the first round of the Class 2A state tournament on Thursday night. Green, now 33-5 on the season, will face 10th-ranked Colton Milosevich of Woodward-Granger this afternoon.

Green’s partner in Washington’s wrestling room, 120-pounder Tristan Pohren, lost both of his matches on Thursday evening and was eliminated from competition.

Pohren lost an 8-1 decision to seventh-ranked Caleb Coleman of Bondurant-Farrar in his first match, and then was pinned by eighth-ranked Cole Parmely of Oelwein in a consolation match. Pohren ends his junior season with a record of 32-8.

Mid-Prairie brothers Phirom and Nearoth Peterschmidt are still alive in the Class 2A tournament. Phirom, ranked ninth at 182 pounds, lost a 4-3 decision to Beford-Lenox senior Cole Bonde in the first round, but came back with a 10-4 win over Carlisle senior Nathan Stickley. Nearoth, ranked 10th at 195 pounds, was pinned by fifth-ranked Christian Brobst of Sioux City Heelan in the first round, but dominated Atlantic senior Tyler Stork for an 11-2 major decision in his consolation match. Both Phirom and Nearoth Peterschmidt will wrestle again later today.

Highland junior Travis Cole, who is ranked ninth at 126 pounds, won his first match in the Class 1A tournament with a 16-0 technical fall over eighth-ranked Colby McIntire of Central Lyon-George-Little Rock. Cole lost a 4-1 decision to fourth-ranked Lane Nichols of Woodbury Central in the quarterfinals, but came back with a 10-5 win over fifth-ranked Joel Haberman of Clarion-Goldfield in the consolation bracket. Cole will face 10th-ranked Jacob Koch of Alburnett today.

Sigourney-Keota’s three wrestlers have all been eliminated from the 1A tournament. Senior Josh Yoder, who is ranked fourth at 145 pounds, lost to Elk Horn Kimballton sophomore Evan Hansen 9-7 in overtime in his first-round match. Yoder rebounded with a 13-11 win over East Buchanan senior Colton Stoddard, but was eliminated when he lost to 10th-ranked Casey Pence of West Branch. He finished his season with a record of 35-6.

Sophomore 170-pounder Cole Streigle lost both of his matches by fall. He was pinned by fifth-ranked Nick Schany of Emmetsburg in 2:48, and eighth-ranked Zach Hoyle of Emmetsburg pinned Streigle in 1:10. Streigle finished his season with a record of 28-9. Junior 285-pounder Tucker Fowler also was pinned in both of his matches. Third-ranked Landon Paulsen of Woodbury Central pinned him in 2:54, and Garrett Johnston won by fall in 4:14. Fowler finished his season with a record of 20-13.

WACO 160-pounder Cey Saeugling was also pinned in both of his matches. Second-ranked Dylan Winfield pinned Saeugling in 31 seconds, and MMC senior Dylan Rolfes also pinned Saeugling in the first period. Saeugling finished his junior season with a record of 34-12.
