Relatives in Wayland have received word of the death of Willard D. Conrad, 88, of Hesston, Kan., on Aug. 2, 2013.

Willard was born April 7, 1925, a son of Daniel and Luetta Kauffman Conrad, and grew up on a farm near Wayland. He was baptized in 1939, and became a member of Sugar Creek Mennonite Church. Most recently, he was a member of Hesston Mennonite Church.

It was at Goshen College he met Hettie Conrad of Smithville, Ohio. They were married in 1949.

Mr. Conrad received master’s degrees from the University of Iowa and Wichita State University. He served on the Mennonite Board of Education. He spent 48 years in a career equally divided between teaching and pastoring.

He is survived by his wife, Hettie; five children, Cathy Conrad of Albuquerque, N.M., Daniel Conrad and wife Mary Ann of Flagstaff, Ariz., Stephen Conrad and wife Sandy of Goessel, Sarah Conrad Yoder and husband Tim of Archbold, Ohio, and Nancy Schroeder and husband Ron of Moundridge; a sister-in-law, Joyce (Hirschy) Conrad of Wayland; a brother-in-law, Stanley Leichty of Goshen, Ind.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Edwin and James Conrad, and a sister, Ruth Leichty.

Please join the Wayland Economic Development Group and the FIND (Fulfilling Iowa’s Need for Dentists) project stakeholders as they host a reception in recognition of Dr. Amanda Gilles, the recipient of the 2013 Delta Dental of Iowa FIND loan repayment program.

The reception will be held Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Dr. Pusey Dentistry located at 209 W. Second St. Food and refreshments will be served
