KALONA – Wendell William Nisly, 70, of Kalona died Thursday, June 22, 2017, in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

A graveside service was held at 9:30 a.m., Monday, June 26, at the Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at the Kalona Mennonite Church. The Rev. Scott Swartzendruber officiated. Visitation was held from 1 to 7 p.m., Sunday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona, with the family greeting friends from 1 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Alms Fund at Kalona Mennonite Church and the Student Aid Fund at Iowa Mennonite School.

Mr. Nisly was born Dec. 2, 1946, in Washington, the son of William and Edith (Swartzendruber) Nisly. He married Muriel Miller on July 21, 1968, at the Sunnyside Mennonite Church in Kalona.

He graduated from Iowa Mennonite School in 1966 and attended Eastern Mennonite College. He served two years in 1W service in Miami, Florida. He drove truck for Pella Meats, was co-owner of Niser Hogs, worked for Nisly Foodland, was co-owner of Kalona Sales Barn, worked as a salesman for English River Pellets and Roth Feed and Seed, was an insurance agent for Menno Services, and delivered pharmaceuticals for Reliant Long Term Care. He served as treasurer for the MCC Relief Sale, and was a certified weather spotter for KCRG. He enjoyed cooking, yard work, bird watching, and cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Surviving are his wife, Muriel, of Kalona; one daughter, Brigette Ingersoll and husband Adam of Iowa City; one son, Shane Nisly of Kalona; four grandchildren; and seven siblings, Rachel Kemp and husband Alvin of Kalona, Sheldon Nisly and wife Miriam of Kalona, Weldon Nisly and wife Margaret of Seattle, Washington, Jenelle Bender and husband Dwight of Kalona, Marcus Nisly and wife Sandra of Elkhart, Indiana, Hope Nisly Kliewer and husband Doug of Reedley, California, and Ross Nisly and wife Lynn of Hutchinson, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
