The Columbus Junction High School boys’ varsity basketball team defeated the Louisa – Muscatine Falcons in a home Southeast Iowa Super Conference game on Friday, Jan. 31, 39 – 37.
Columbus senior Eli Sents hit a 3-pointer at 5:58 first quarter to give the Wildcats a 3 – 0 lead. From there it was back and forth through the rest of the first half which ended with the Falcons clinging to a 18 – 17 lead.
The third quarter saw three lead changes until senior Kenan Todd hit a long two-point shot with 1:46 left in the third to give the Wildcats a 30 – 23 lead. The score was 30 – 25 Columbus Junction at the end of the third quarter.
“We put in a couple of new set plays over the past couple of days and the guys moved the ball really well. We were able to take advantage of our inside edge and once they started collapsing they got the ball out for open jumps shots” Columbus Junction head coach Mark Beerends said.
Louisa – Muscatine and Columbus Junction went through three more lead changes and two ties in the fourth quarter to arrive at the 39 – 37 Wildcat lead with mere seconds remaining. The Falcons had the ball and got into the key for a lay-in jumper but the ball rimmed out and the Wildcats avoided overtime.
“Towards the end we made some crucial free-throws and that ended up being the difference in the game,” Beerends added.
Columbus Junction shot 47 percent (15/32) from the field, 2/6 from 3-point range and 7/14 from the free-throw line. The Wildcats grabbed 30 rebounds and six steals. Columbus Junction also registered seven assists.
Senior Alex Mincer led the Wildcats with nine points. Senior Rickey Rivers grabbed eight rebounds to lead Columbus Junction. Todd and Mincer each had two assists. Todd blocked a shot.
Columbus Junction is now 4 – 13 overall, 4 – 12 in the SEISC. The Wildcats take the court again on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at WACO.
