By John Butters, The JOURNAL

Wrestling legend and National Wrestling Hall of Fame Distinguished Member Dan Gable, will visit Washington Dec.6 while on a book signing tour sponsored by Caseys General Stores.

Gable will appear at the east side Caseys from 5 to 6 p.m. He will have signed copies of his books available for sale, including his latest book,”A Wrestling Life 2.” Gable will make appearances at a number of Casey’s General Stores throughout Iowa to promote the sport of wrestling and talk with his fans.

Caseys, a financial supporter of both wrestling in Iowa and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, and has said it planned the tour in part to thank its customers for their loyalty.

Gable will be accompanied by long-time friend and associate Mike Doughty, a Washington native and resident. Doughty, who is a Director of Development for the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, is coordinating the tour with Caseys.

Following his wrestling career at Washington, Doughty wrestled for Gable at both Iowa State and Iowa University. He was on the 1972 championship team at Iowa State.

When speaking of his experiences as a wrestler, Doughty is modest concerning his own accomplishments, preferring to talk about what he learned as a member of Gable’s wrestling teams. Gable taught him valuable lessons about life, he said.

“I learned more from Coach Gable than some of the guys with God-given talent,” Doughty said of his experiences.”I never heard him say you have to win tonight. I heard him say you have to do your best.”

At Washington High School, Doughty wrestled at 145 pounds. At the collegiate level, he wrestled at 150 and 158.
